Successful Women. Indra Nooyi.

Successful Women. Indra Nooyi.

The woman I’m going to talk about today is the head of one of the biggest companies on the planet: PepsiCo.

But the article is not about this famous brand, it’s an inspiring story about someone with incredible talent who has broken down several barriers (and borders) and reached the top.

Indra Nooyi, 61, was born in India. Her mother encouraged her and her sister to fantasize both about getting married, which is typical for traditional families, and about becoming the President of India. And things were bound to cause an effect.

In addition to great dreams, the young Indra had intelligence, initiative and strength. She studied Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Business Administration… She got hired by Johnsons & Johnsons in India. But she wanted more and set out to continue her training at Yale and got a scholarship.

All this journey is the result of a lot of effort, as well as her first years in the United States. At Yale, the only money she had was the scholarship money, so she spent her university years wearing the same saris she had brought from home because he could not afford other clothes.

The odds were against her in the 80’s, being a woman, a foreigner, of humble origin. And yet she made a profound impact while at The Boston Consulting Group, she worked at Motorola and became the vice president. She started at PepsiCo in 1994, and in 2001, she was the financial director. In 2006 she was the president of the company.

Maybe you didn’t know, but it’s so: this immigrant woman of humble origin has been in charge of the second most profitable food company in the world for several years. And with her financial strategy she achieved significant results in a short time, making Pepsi overcome its rival, Coca Cola, in market value. Coca Cola had to tighten the screws to catch up.

Nooyi revitalized PepsiCo at an economic level, which was the result of a major company reorganization with health and environmental focus and the addition of varied products and brands.

The Indra Nooyi’s story is a story about how your talent can take you very far. It may be hard at the beginning, but with perseverance and will, you can achieve it. Believing with all your heart that there is something bigger awaiting you and that you won’t stop until you achieve it. Nooyi also teaches us that it’s not enough just to reach the goal, you must keep improving, innovating, creating.
